These workshops convened library and NREN stakeholders in late 2018 and March and April 2019 to discuss the survey and explore how repositories can better engage with NREN services to add value and support the growth of open science in the region.

Each iteration therefore became a step towards producing a rich pool of best practices and information related to a working model for librarians, NRENs and content providers to collaborate to support sustainable Open Access repository development. These activities also produced a viable core of key institutional focal points in higher education institutions.

LIBSENSE Repository Workshop I (Ubuntunet Alliance)

LIBSENSE Repository Workshop I (Ubuntunet Alliance)

This workshop, organized in conjunction with the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) and EIFL, convened library and NREN stakeholders to explore how repositories can operate embedded in NREN e-infrastructure and provide a foundation for an innovative, open, distributed and networked resource for scholarly communication and open science in Africa.

The 2-day meeting discussed results of the LIBSENSE survey of how higher education sector librarians view the enabling and constraining factors of their practice as information resource managers especially regarding the development, implementation and maintenance of open access repositories.

The outcomes from this workshop were developed further in two follow-on events; in the WACREN region collocated as a side event with the 2019 conference in Accra, Ghana and in the ASREN region where regional stakeholders met from April 27-29, 2019 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt.
